About this site
A dictionary built from scratch: definitions are written by our editors, not copied from existing dictionaries. Every fact cites its source, and every entry carries a verification date.
How an entry is made
- Facts first. Editors establish the part of speech, pronunciation, inflections and etymology from sources: public-domain dictionaries, published grammatical data and pronunciation dictionaries.
- The definition. The wording is written from scratch from those facts alone. No language model sees another dictionary’s phrasing, so it cannot reproduce it by paraphrase.
- N-gram check. An automated test compares the new text against a corpus of external definitions and blocks excessive phrase overlap.
- Review. An editor checks the facts and the wording, and the result is recorded in the entry status and footer. Review is a stage of the editorial process and does not hold back an entry that already has its full set of layers and sources.
What we don’t do
- We do not copy or paraphrase definitions from other dictionaries.
- We do not use share-alike licensed content (CC BY-SA) in the core of the site, not even as quotations, because at scale the process cannot be kept clean.
- We do not index drafts. An entry in
draftstatus is served withnoindexand stays out of the sitemap, because it is missing template layers or sources. - We never name a reviewer who does not exist. Until an entry is signed by a person, its footer credits the site editors and its structured data carries no
reviewedByfield.
Current state
This site is a prototype: 21 entries written, the content pipeline works, and editorial review of the entries is under way.
